Dear Friend of Life:
Even after 17 years of being a sidewalk counselor, there’s a temptation to play it small.
Sometimes, you can feel like a clown on the sidewalk, waving with a big smile and calling those sitting in an abortion facility parking lot over to talk. (Keep in mind that due to the set up of an abortion facility, you might be pushed back from the entrance many feet since we can only stand on the public sidewalk — or risk trespass — so the smile and wave is a HUGE asset!) At times, you’re tempted to do a smaller wave …and just let go if they don’t see you or don’t initially respond.
Don’t get me wrong: You should not harass people — that’s bad people skills and is ultimately self-defeating. But there IS a difference between a timid smile and tiny wave vs. a big wave, a few projected words of love, and invite where you really put yourself out there. And you must have the confidence to try again in a bit if they initially refuse — I cannot tell you how many times I won a life-saving conversation with some loving persistence!
I remember recently being on the sidewalk with two members of our National Team in Tampa, FL. I prayed I wouldn’t play it small. No regrets …right?!
Right after I prayed that prayer to be humble enough to really put myself out there — even if I got rejected — our team witnessed TWO WOMEN choose life!
It’s the same with deciding whether or not to take that leap of faith and try Sidewalk Advocates for Life.
It can seem so intimidating to even think about reaching out to abortion-minded women and men at your local facility. And we get that. But one think that we teach in the training is that it doesn’t depend on YOU, it depends on God and those who must respond to His grace. People make choices. You can do everything “right”: you can throw the “sidewalk advocacy training manual” at them …and still, they might choose abortion.
After 17 years of doing this, I still experience many couples who are so hardened to help and hope, they reject my offer. But they’re not rejecting me. It’s not my fault. They are simply not choosing to accept the rescue ship God has sent at that moment.
But nothing is lost in the Kingdom of God. I keep in mind that even if they ultimately choose abortion, the Lord has allowed me to plant seeds that may ultimately save their soul. If I have been loving and peaceful (even if I was straight-forward and firm!) in my interactions with them, they will remember that moment and give it a second …third …tenth thought where they might finally decide to start anew and give themselves to Him.
They will never forget that moment, so it’s so important we be someone we are proud to be on the sidewalk.
Don’t get me wrong: Quality training is essential. We must resign ourselves to becoming the most well-trained Sidewalk Advocates that we can possibly be, prepared for just about any situation that we may experience, as we know that God works through the ordinary.
Well, knowing how busy you are, we’ve done the hard work for you. We’ve put together a quality training, tools, and support program so that you can be ready to make a difference for life in the community right where you live!
Won’t you give it a shot? No regrets …right?!
Applications to bring Sidewalk Advocates for Life to YOUR town or city close TODAY at 11:59 pm CST! If you’re ready to take the leap of faith and give our program a try, go to sidewalkadvocates.org/apply!
After that, we’ll set up a brief phone call with a couple members of our national team to review all that you get in the program, and you can ask as many questions as you want. Once approved, we ship you all the training materials, and we walk with you— still answering your questions, of course — as you build your team of Sidewalk Advocates at your local abortion facility!
Either way, here’s our promise to you: Give it a try for a few months, and if you discern this ministry is not a good fit, no problem — no pressure whatsoever from us to continue. BUT JUST A WARNING: Most folks who “gave it a try” were hooked after a couple weeks!
