Sidewalk Emergency Team Heads to DNC

Planned Parenthood reached a disgusting new low last week …

The abortion giant headed to Chicago to provide FREE abortions and vasectomies in a van during the Democratic National Convention. Planned Parenthood coined the term “demurtsey” (“cutesy” meets “demure” !?!) to describe the abortion van and advertised their services with a large blow-up IUD. We couldn’t make this up if we tried.

This repulsive political ploy turned what should have been a serious week about the upcoming election into an abortion carnival. Killing innocent preborn children was “celebrated” with women dancing in abortion-pill costumes and jokes all around.

Sadly, this is just one more chapter in Planned Parenthood’s long-demonstrated willingness to sacrifice children and women on the altar of power and politics. And we refused to standby during this latest assault on life.

In less than 24 hours, we were able to mobilize a team of volunteer Sidewalk Advocates led by our Regional Programs manager Melissa to head to Chicago. In the words of one of our Advocates, Bud:

I learned that Planned Parenthood would have a mobile unit in Chicago offering abortions and vasectomies. My heart ached, and I was angry at their boldness in flaunting abortion. I prayed for the pro-life people who would be there.

Bud is in the midst of cancer treatment. On the way home from a biopsy procedure, he received word that Sidewalk Advocates for Life was putting together an emergency sidewalk team to respond to Planned Parenthood. What was his response? He immediately called his doctor to ask if he could travel (even though he was only a couple hours out of anesthesia!). After getting the blessing from his doctor and wife, and financial support from his community to make the trip, he headed to join the team.

With the prayers and support of their local communities, our team arrived in Chicago before Planned Parenthood began seeing clients. In partnership with a mobile clinic, our Advocates set up a presence to counter Planned Parenthood’s abortion “carnival.” Armed with smiles, pregnancy-help literature, and gift bags, they prepared to offer real help to the women and children who had fallen prey to Planned Parenthood’s deadly political power play.

By all accounts from our team on the ground — Planned Parenthood was not able to kill as many babies as they claimed in the media — praise God! And our Advocates were able to make great inroads into the Chicago community (including with those who were working on the Planned Parenthood “side” of the fence). All in all, it was a good day for LIFE!

Our team headed home after the Planned Parenthood political spectacle was over. Everyone except Bud, that is.

Bud decided to stay in Chicago, called to the sidewalk to do more good despite fending off fatigue in the wake of his biopsy procedure. And God answered his commitment with a beautiful encounter for Christ. At an abortion facility near the airport, Bud encountered a family who had experienced the trauma of abortion. Initially, reluctant to open up, the father eventually shared his story, accepted resources, and offered hugs upon leaving with a path toward healing

After this interaction, Bud shared:

I thank the Lord for the opportunity to be His hands and feet. I’m grateful that Sidewalk Advocates trusted me enough to call on me when they needed help. I’m also thankful for those who gave to help offset the cost, for my wife’s support in letting me go, and for the people we were able to reach.

Unfortunately, upon his return, Bud learned that his cancer has spread. He is planning a course of treatment with one thought in mind: “Here I am, send me.” Please join us in prayer for Bud’s complete healing and that each of us might be the good and faithful servant that He continues to be!

We are grateful to all our volunteers who stepped up to meet this emergency need and the supporters who helped them answer the call. May God bless you for your generous commitment to protecting the most vulnerable among us.

Babies saved:

A baby is recorded as a “save” when a pregnant woman accepts our offer of help at the local pregnancy resource center (PRC), verbally shares that she has chosen life, or gives us very clear signs that she has chosen life.
