“God Made Us a Sign”

When a pregnant woman approached  Dr. Emily Women’s Health Center one Saturday, the local Sidewalk Advocates for Life leader engaged her in conversation. The woman, already a mother of two other children, shared that earlier that day, she had thought,

If someone tries to talk me out of (getting an abortion), that’s going to be a sign from God.

Since there was not a nearby pregnancy center open, the leader initiated a phone conversation between the mom and the Sisters of Life, who serve pregnant moms. Another Sidewalk Advocate then asked the mom:

Can you imagine your life with this child? What does he or she look like? How would he or she play with his or her other siblings? Do you see it? … Now, imagine your life without this child.

The young mother said “No, I can’t. But I have to go (in).” The Sidewalk Advocate replied, “Ok, you can go, but as you wait, think about this.”

Despite the mom’s seeming openness to life, she went into the abortion facility “just to talk to them.”

“I encourage you not to do that,” the leader said to her, but she entered anyway. On her way in, though, the mom was clearly struck by the many people who had now gathered outside in prayer.

Less than an hour later, the woman came back outside. “I changed my mind,” she told the Sidewalk Advocates. “I bet you’re all happy.”

“We’re happy!” the leader responded. “And I bet I know someone else who’s happy, too!” He pointed at her belly.

As they said their good-byes, he encouraged the woman to stay in touch with the Sisters of Life, and to take advantage of all the resources available to her.

“I’m glad that God made us a sign to her,” the leader said later. “And I’m glad she was open to it!”
