While we were introducing a new mobile-unit nurse to life on the sidewalk, we saw a distraught man with his young daughter waiting outside the abortion facility. As we called out to him to offer assistance, he noticed vomit on the sidewalk by the entrance of the abortion facility. His eyes grew wide, and he began to cry. He rushed over to where we were standing and began asking questions about fetal development, desperately wanting to know if his baby had arms and legs already.
We explained how life begins at conception and how the heart is already beating. In between sobs, he told us that his girlfriend was inside the facility and was determined to abort. He shared that as soon as they stepped foot out of the car, he was convinced ending the pregnancy was the wrong decision. We told him about the free services we offered and urged him to go get his girlfriend out of the abortion facility.
The facility staff had told him he could not be in there with her, nor was she allowed to have a phone. Despite this attempt to isolate her, he went inside and pleaded with his girlfriend as if it was, fittingly, “life or death.” She exited the facility clearly upset, and then joined the man and their daughter in the medical mobile unit. We learned the family was from out of state and had driven all night to get to the abortion facility by morning. The couple had recently broken up, and she was raising their daughter on her own.
We poured as much life and support as we could into this young couple, while their beautiful daughter held a baby fetal model swaddled in a blanket on her lap. The mobile-unit staff provided the woman a pregnancy test and ultrasound, which confirmed her pregnancy. As they saw their baby’s heart beating on the screen, the mom and dad both became emotional. And their daughter yelled out,
“It’s a baby!”
After three hours on the medical mobile unit, they chose life — praise be to God! Before the couple and their daughter began their trek home, we prayed together and referred them to a pregnancy resource center in the same small town where they were from. Please join us in continued prayer for this family — that the Holy Spirit will continue to invade their hearts with love, wisdom, and courage as they prepare for the arrival of their new little blessing!
