Last month, we reached an incredible milestone – 25,000 babies saved! Every one of these lives is a testimony to the power of our humble “yes” in cooperation with God’s mighty grace. Possibly the most profound example of this humble cooperation is three-week-old baby Damien (pictured above with his mom), who couldn’t say a word … yet his tiny hand became the reason another baby is alive today.
His mother Colleen, one of our faithful Sidewalk Advocates, had been unsure if she should return to the sidewalk with her newborn baby. Still, something in her soul told her she needed to go. So, she prayed, strapped baby Damien into his carrier, and stood outside her local abortion facility — as a peaceful witness of love and life.
Not long after, a young woman arrived for her abortion appointment, and rejected the resources offered by other Advocates. But as the woman approached the facility, Colleen gently called out:
“If you don’t want to do this, then you don’t have to do this. And we can help you.”
The woman politely thanked Colleen for her offer of help but still headed into the abortion facility. Colleen and her fellow Advocates continued to pray.
What Colleen didn’t know was that, in that brief exchange, the woman had caught a glimpse of Damien’s tiny hand resting outside his carrier — small, fragile, and full of life.
Thirty minutes later, the facility door opened again. The same woman emerged and walked to her car. A few minutes later, the woman’s husband pulled up in their car to tell Colleen that his wife had changed her mind, explaining,
“She saw [your baby’s] hand, and she couldn’t do it.”
The Advocates rejoiced with the couple, assured them of their continued prayers, and gave them resources for ongoing support. Colleen reflected on this powerful moment:
“It’s so good to know that one more person exists because I decided … to go out there and that God encouraged me to go out there even when I thought I couldn’t.”
That’s the power of one small hand,
the power of one “yes” to showing up,
the power of love that breaks through fear to bring hope,
the power to save not only one life, but generations.
